National School Nurse Workforce Studies

NASN’s national school nurse workforce studies provide a rigorous and consistent body of data on who school nurses are and how school nursing services are delivered and supported. NASN will use these data to help school nurses, researchers, policymakers, and education leaders understand workforce needs and make informed decisions about staffing, funding, and professional support.

Why Workforce Data Matter

NASN has completed two previous national school nurse workforce studies (Willgerodt et al., 2018; Willgerodt et al., 2024), and data from the third study are currently being analyzed. Future surveys will continue to build on this work, allowing NASN to:

  • Track changes in the school nursing workforce over time.
  • Identify staffing, funding, workload, and workforce-support needs.
  • Strengthen advocacy for sustainable school nursing services.
  • Inform workforce development, professional education, and research priorities.
  • Give policymakers, education leaders, and researchers credible national data about school nursing.
